Leshan is a Kenyan born and raised musician with a passion for bringing people together and building As a highly accomplished and respected bassist in the Edmonton music industry, Leshan Masikonte is known for his ability to seamlessly blend various styles and genres, including rock, pop, funk, jazz, and R&B, while creating intricate and grooving bass lines. Fueled by a passion for the instrument, Leshan began playing the bass in 2014, 1 year before moving to Canada to study business in college. Here, he honed his business skills while continuing to develop his musical talents through performances and collaborations with local artists.
Leshan's career began with Melafrique. When he met Riwo in residence and heard her voice, he was sold! They formed the group alongside keyboard player extraordinaire Aristoteles, and have only grown from there. He also worked as a session musician, where he played on countless recordings for various artists and gained recognition for his versatility and musicianship. He soon began performing live with some of Edmonton's well-known artists, and later served as the music and technical director for multiple artists, including Martin Kerr, Jenesia, Tea Gonzales, Jess Stokes, Josh Sahunta, and Mouraine. He currently serves as the Co-founder and Band Leader of Melafrique.
As a band member, Leshan has contributed to several albums that have received critical acclaim and commercial success, such as the Edmonton Music Award-nominated album "Mexico" by Edmonton artist Jenesia. Melafrique also won the Clarence 'Big' Miller Award for outstanding performance. Furthermore, Leshan served as the musical director for the documentary film "Afrobeats in the Prairies," which further enhanced and inspired his interest in directing various types of projects. He has worked on records for multiple artists including Arlo Maverick, Sympa Cesar, Jillian Treidler just to name but a few.
Leshan is a well-sought-after bass player and musical director in Edmonton, frequently invited to perform and direct various projects and live performances, and is respected as a prominent figure in the Edmonton music community. Continuously pushing boundaries and inspiring other musicians through his innovative playing and dedication to his craft, Leshan has solidified his place as one of the most in-demand musicians and musical directors in Edmonton and across Alberta. He lives by the mantra, "Dare to dream because with steady and smart work ethic, you can become your greatest dreams."
